Applied Mathematics

Undergraduate Applied Mathematics is a program emphasizing both the modeling of physical phenomena and methods of analyzing the resulting mathematical problems. Applied mathematicians study mathematical problems that arise in science, engineering or management.

The program stresses courses that involve the construction, analysis, and evaluation of mathematical models of real-world problems and those areas of mathematics most widely used to solve them.

Applied Mathematics allows for considerable flexibility but it is recommended that a student acquire a solid background in the three principal areas of:

  • Modeling
  • Analysis or Solution Methods
  • Numerical Analysis

For the third and fourth years the requirements are:

Third Year
Fall Semester Credit Hours
MATH-4200 Mathematical Analysis I 4
MATH-4800 Numerical Computing 4
  Elective 4
Humanities or Social Sciences Elective 4
Spring Semester Credit Hours
  Mathematics Option 4
  Mathematics Option 4
  Elective 4
Humanities or Social Sciences Elective 4

Fourth Year
Fall Semester Credit Hours
MATH-4700 Foundations of Applied Math I 4
  Mathematics Option 4
  Culminating Experience (1) 4
  Elective 4
Spring Semester Credit Hours
  Mathematics Option 4
  Elective 4
  Elective 4

Students should note that the mathematics options listed above are any 4000-level or higher course from the Department of Mathematical Sciences. It is recommended that students take PHYS-1100 and PHYS-1200 and those who may continue on to graduate school should consider taking MATH-4210 and MATH-4100.

(1) The culminating experience is a course or project to be chosen with the approval of the Mathematical Sciences department.
