The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers graduate students a range of classes, from upper level undergraduate courses to graduate level courses and special topics courses.

All Math Sciences grads must be aware of the requirements for the degree they seek: M.S. and/or Ph.D. You should read the appropriate page and be very familiar with them. It is your responsibility to make sure you meet these requirements. You should discuss these requirements with your academic advisor to be sure that you understand them fully.

Here are some additional comments on a few of the requirements:

Doctoral Students

  • If you plan on getting an M.S. along the way to your Ph.D., you must fulfill all of the M.S. requirements.
  • You may want to consider transferring in credits you have earned elsewhere. You are permitted to transfer up to 45 credits.
  • The department requirements allow graduate students to take both 6000-level and 4000-level courses. However, be aware that the Institute limits the total number of 4000-level credits counting towards a doctoral degree to be no more than 1/3 of the total number of course credits. You should be sure to take an appropriate number of 6000-level courses.

Master’s Students

  • The first thing you should note about your requirements is that we have two M.S. programs at Rensselaer. Be sure your courses match the program you wish to be in.
  • The second thing to note is the Capstone Professional Experience. New York State requires such an experience for every M.S. degree.
  • You may want to consider transferring in credits you have earned elsewhere. You are allowed to transfer up to 6 credits.
