Independent Study/Undergraduate Project Registration Form (PDF file)
An independent study course serves to fill educational needs in areas which are beyond regular departmental offerings. Independent study is an individualized reading or research course (or series of courses) that is proposed by a student to a faculty member (or vice versa). Typically these fall within that faculty member's area of expertise. The following conditions apply:
- Interested students must demonstrate an ability to work independently, and have the needed prerequisites to undertake the proposed project successfully.
- The faculty member must commit sufficient time to undertake the supervision of the proposed course of study.
- The amount of work expected and the level at which it is to be carried out must be similar to the demands of an equivalent course.
- Independent study is offered at the discretion of faculty members who may place additional constraints on student participation.
To take an independent study course one must register for either MATH-4940/6940 or MATP-4940/6940 on-line. See the directions, and fill out the Independent Study/Undergraduate Project Registration Form (PDF). Notice that the system does not allow you to adjust the number of credits when your register, but you can do this after you register by going to the "Registration Menu" and clicking "Update Independent Study, Project or Thesis Credits."
