Doctoral Committee

Nomination of the Doctoral Committee Form (PDF file)

The Chair of the Graduate Committee assigns a temporary adviser to assist you as soon as you enter the department. As soon as you have chosen a doctoral thesis area, you should arrange to conduct the thesis work with an adviser who is a full-time tenure track member of the faculty. The thesis adviser will consult with you regarding the nomination of a doctoral committee of at least four members.

The committee must include at least four full-time tenure-track Rensselaer faculty members. One committee member must be outside the Math Sciences Department. The outside member may also be an additional fifth scientist or professor from outside the university. The committee members represent the principal areas included in the student's Plan of Study.

After the doctoral committee has been decided, you must submit the Nomination of the Doctoral Committee Form. This should be given to the Graduate Student Coordinator who will send the original to the Graduate School. This must be completed in advance of your candidacy presentation.
