Speaker: Robert F. Henrick (Johns Hopkins University) "Mathematics as a Launching Pad"

Dr. Robert F. Henrick returns to RPI, 29 years after receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics, to offer a perspective on his post-RPI career and education. He is currently a Program Manager at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and has held a variety of positions including Department Head at Bell Laboratories, Director of Forward Looking Work at AT&T Consumer Products, Head of an internal communications venture at Lucent Technologies, VP of Marketing and Product Management at Xebeo Communications (an optical packet switch venture), and a Senior Partner at Oglivy and Mather (a major New York advertising agency). Over his career, he has accumulated 12 US patents and is currently a SME (Subject Matter Expert) in US Navy distributed fields and communications solutions.
His talk describes a perspective about the completion of formal education being the initiation of professional education. He promises to share his insights on leveraging mathematical thought process and training in the government and commercial sector through a set of lessons learned and personal experiences. He will also share some perspectives on challenges and opportunities for applied mathematics in the future.
